Ileum Slides

In this survey image of the ileum, the lymphoid nodules of Peyer's patch are seen between the mucosa (right) and muscularis propria (left).

At high-power, the nodules can be seen subjacent to the muscularis mucosae that runs from top to bottom at the center of the image.  In some places the muscularis mucosae is obscured by the lymphocytic infiltrate.  Note the dense accumulations of lymphocytes in the lamina propria that forms the core of the villi at right.

In ideal sections, the flattened epithelial lining containing M or membranous epithelial cells can be observed as in this view.  Note the M cells in the lining at top directly across from a bit of luminal space bordered by a typical stretch of absorptive epithelium containing numerous goblet cells.
